A supermarket has been forced to close after heavy rainfall damaged the roof.

Downpours yesterday caused widespread flash flooding across Sittingbourne, including at Asda in Mill Way.

Water could be seen dripping from the ceiling. The store will be closed all day today (Sunday) while it is cleaned and made safe.

Management hope to reopen it tomorrow morning at 8am at its usual time.

A spokesman for Asda said: "Following the torrential downpour in much of the area last night the Asda Sittingbourne superstore was closed and will remain closed all day Sunday so that it can be cleaned and made safe for colleagues and customers.

"We would like to thank our customers for their understanding."

During the downpour the supermarket's car park also became flooded making entrance to the store difficult for customers.

On the opposite side of the road the car park for Screwfix was also completely flooded.

The floods came after the town was hit hard by thunder storms and heavy rain on Saturday.
