The Maidstone-bound carriageway on the A249 was closed as crews tackled a vehicle fire.
It broke out at the Stockbury roundabout and highways officials said it was affecting traffic in all directions.
Police confirmed they were called at 5.21pm to assist with the carriageway closure, while Kent Fire and Rescue worked to extinguish the flames.
At one stage Stockbury-bound traffic on the A249 was queuing all the way back to the Iwade turn-off.
The carriageway has since reopened.
