KENT Police have launched an investigation following an incident in which two men were injured and a car window was smashed with an axe.

The incident happened between 9.30am and 9.40am in East Street, Sittingbourne, on Monday.

Police media spokeswoman Sally Smith said: "It has been reported that 39-year-old local man entered a café where an altercation with a 55-year-old man took place.

"The 39-year-old is said too have left the café, got in his car and attempted to drive away. It is then alleged that the 55-year-old smashed the driver’s window with an axe and the car became involved in a collision with a bollard."

"The 39-year-old man suffered a cut to his eye and his elbow and received several scratches. The 55-year-old also received treatment for his injuries. Neither of the men, who knew each other, are reported to have been seriously hurt."

Police say about £1,000 worth of damage was caused to a silver Mercedes Benz during the incident.

Chief Insp Mark Chambers said: "We believe there were numerous witnesses to this incident and would ask anyone who has not already spoken to the police to get in contact.

"Understandably this event has shocked many people, as it is so out of the ordinary for an assault involving a weapon to be reported in the area.

"We are now in the process of investigating this incident further and I would like to stress that violent behaviour will simply not be tolerated.’
