A paint-happy pooch from Sittingbourne has been named the nation's most destructive pet.

Cocker spaniel Samuel has topped the poll, beating a pot-smashing tortoise called Timothy and many furniture chewing dogs.

The three-year-old mutt beat more than 100 other entries after knocking a can of blue paint down the stairs, which spilled all over his owner's cream carpet.

The competition was run by retail company ScS, which sells upholstered furniture and floorings and has 300 stores.

Owner Zara Angelova said: “I’d just finished painting an old chest of drawers and foolishly left the open pot at the top of the stairs because I heard my phone ringing. Samuel followed me down the stairs and, in doing so, knocked over the pot.

“Result? One destroyed carpet and a large bill to replace it all. He looked so sorry that I couldn’t find it in my heart to be angry with him.”

Thanks to the clumsy spaniel, Zara will now receive a brand new ScS sofa worth £399. Let's just hope no open paint tins get too close.

Runners-up include a three-year-old pomeranian called Bella who left her owner's pillow in tatters and a black cat called Ellie El Gato, who is fond of using her owner's sofa as a chew toy.
