Residents have spoken out after being left without water for more than 16 hours.

Hundreds of Sittingbourne households are still without water after a burst pipe in the early hours of this morning.

The pipe, which is thought to supply water to around 2,000 properties in three postcodes, burst at around 2am today.

Southern Water said earlier today that they had re-routed another pipe, meaning the issue should have been resolved in "most homes".

It was delivering bottled water this morning to some elderly and vulnerable residents who were still without a supply.

However, Swale borough councillor Mike Whiting says that a large number of households in the original affected area still have no water; more than 16 hours after the water was first shut off.

"It is totally unacceptable that in this day and age we can be in a situation where we don't have water in homes," he said.

"Southern Water say that they are fixing it but there has been zero communication to us about when it will happen, and everyone in this area has been without any water all day.

"Many of my neighbours are elderly, and the ones next to me have a young baby – the four litres or so of water that have been given to some are not enough, and others have not even got that."

Shortly after 10am, the firm said: "We are continuing to work on a burst in the Sittingbourne area and apologise to customers in some ME8, ME9 and ME10 areas who may be experiencing low pressure or loss of supply.

"We have re-routed the network and most homes should now have water again.

"We will be delivering bottled water to those on the Priority Service Register in the next few hours.

"If you or anyone you know needs support please call 0330 3030368."

Southern Water has been contacted for further updates.
