A Kemsley woman has returned from a trip which saw her drive more than 4,000 miles through five countries.

Debbie Mannering and her partner Simon Day, who live in Edyngham Close, set off from the Dancing Dog Saloon in Bobbing at the end of March to take part in the Boom Banger Rally.

The competition sees teams from all over the world buy a car, which must cost no more than £250, and race from Reims in France to Marrakech.

Along the way, they are set challenges such as treasure hunts and games of tags.

Ms Mannering decided to take part in the epic adventure to raise money for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) after she lost her mother, Janet, to the illness last year.

The 51-year-old described her experiences in the rally: “There were 14 cars in total.

“As a group we had speeding problems – a few got pulled over speeding.

“We also had to deal with wheel-clamping, getting lost, and pick-pockets in Marrakech.”

Through her efforts, she managed to raise £2,000.

This is on top of a further £3,800 that was raised by the ladies of Sittingbourne and Milton Regis Golf Club.

Three months before she passed away from lung cancer at the age of 74, Janet Mannering was the club’s Lady Captain and her nominated charity was CRUK.

Since her death, the women of the club have continued her fundraising work.
