Drivers were facing delays on the M2 after a two-car crash.
Police were called to the coastbound stretch between junction 5, for Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone, and junction 6, for Faversham, at 10am.
Police confirmed no injuries were reported but a lane had to be closed "to ensure public safety".
Highways England was also called to a breakdown on the same stretch of road and the carriageway was clear by about 4.15pm.
A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We came across the incident and checked people over but no one required hospital treatment."
It comes after additional traffic would have been using the M2 after officers shut the M20 following a crash between two lorries, a van and a car last night.
The road has since reopened.
