An increase in reports of "dangerous driving" has resulted in a dispersal order being put in place this weekend.

Police will be given tougher powers to crackdown on nuisance motorists in certain roads in Swale – including Sheppey Way, Old Ferry Road, Swale Way, and Barge Way – from 7pm today until 7pm on Sunday.

The order is being put in place due to an increase in reports of nuisance vehicles and dangerous driving in the district at weekends.

It allows officers to stop anyone involved in anti-social behaviour and move them on from the area.

Sgt Ryan Chase, of the Swale Community Safety Unit, said: "Residents have reported concerns about the dangers posed to other road users and the impact on the quality of life of the community.

"The order gives our officers additional powers to move on anyone causing a nuisance and, if necessary, arrest those who return to the area once dispersed.

"Those who persist in this behaviour also risk having their vehicles seized."

Last October, the noise of nuisance vehicles being driven at high speeds kept residents awake late at night.

Dispersal orders were implemented, with officers regularly visiting the locations, and at one point saw about 50 vehicles parked up on roundabouts and grass verges.
