Football fans' prayers were answered when they went to watch England's first World Cup match at a screening in a church.

More than 25 people took a pew to watch the Three Lions' 6-2 victory over Iran at Holy Trinity in Sittingbourne.

It is thought to be the only church showing the footie in Kent, and the first time the vicar has decided to show live sport.

Fans were able the match on sofas in front of the screen.

Rev Chris Penfold said that he was "really pleased" with the turn out at the Church Street venue.

He said: "We got about 30 people who are all from different groups which has created a really good atmosphere.

"When England scored, everyone was cheering, arms up in the air. It was like being down the pub.

"It's nice to know people can come in and have a great time."

"It's a great opportunity to bring people together, everyone is welcome, even if they don't want to watch the football."

Among the motivations to putting the game on was to provide a warm place for people to gather during the cost of living crisis.

Rev Penfold also wanted to bring the community together with something fun and different.

One spectator said: "We wanted to come here because it is fun, friendly and free."

Another remembered the time England took home the trophy in 1966. He said: "Me and my wife were driving at the time.

"I was driving and she was holding the radio. Every time we went round a corner, she was moving the radio so we wouldn't lose connection."

Other matches being shown in the church include:

• Morocco v Croatia – Wednesday, November 23 at 10am
• Qatar v Senegal – Friday, November 25 at 1pm
• England v USA – Friday, November 25 at 7pm
• Wales v England – Tuesday, November 29 at 7pm

It is one of many venues across Kent displaying the World Cup matches.

Rev Penfold hopes to see more going to the church to watch the upcoming matches.

Visitors are reminded it is an alcohol-free, smoking-free, family-friendly event. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.

The church is offering a World Cup cafe with soft drinks, hot drinks and snacks available.
