Sonora Fields could have 20mph speed limit after campaign

A housing estate which has seen a few near misses on its roads is set to be the subject of traffic surveys which could set a new limit of 20mph.
Sonora Fields is being looked at by Kent Highways.
Its roads are set at 30mph but many drivers go faster.
It comes after Cllr James Hunt (Con, The Meads) presented a petition to the Joint Transportation Board at Swale earlier this year calling for safety measures, which had been signed by a few hundred residents.
The fight was taken up by Kent County councillor Mike Whiting (Con, Swale West Division) who asked for five speed surveys to be carried out in September.
He said: “In response to the petition, I spoke to highways officers who came to have a look at the area to see if it’s feasible.
“The result of these tests will determine what will need to be done and what will happen next.”
He said it will cost money to put signs around the estate or even build traffic-calming measures but he hopes it can be covered by his member’s grant.
The surveys will be taking place in three parts of Sonora Way, Jacinth Drive and in Argent Way.
The next stage is when results come back in early October and a plan will be created and subject to public consultation.
It could be another four months before it’s implemented.
Mr Whiting added: “I’ve had a number of complaints about people speeding through particular roads around Sonora Way.
“Thankfully, there’s not been a lot of crashes that have resulted in serious injuries to people but there have been a number of near misses, so residents have been asking for this.”
There is also talk about including Archers Park in the 20mph zone, and Cllr Whiting is asking for people’s opinions on the proposals.
