Four fire crews fought a blaze at Firs Farm, Deans Hill Road, Bredgar, on Saturday when a tank holding heating oil burst into flames. Plumes of smoke could be seen as far as Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey.

Firefighter Dan Godley from Sittingbourne said: "We originally took a call that a bonfire was out of control. But by the time we arrived it had spread to an oil tank. In the heat the plastic tank melted and burst, spilling burning oil onto the driveway."

Four fire engines were needed to provide an adequate supply of water because the detached bungalow was in a remote spot some distance from the nearest fire hydrant.

The home suffered fire damage to its gutters, fascia and roof. It is believed the family was out at the time but had to return to the house to save a pet dog. Firefighters also battled to save a garage.

Fire crews were from Sittingbourne, Chatham, Maidstone and Faversham. The fire broke out at 3.25pm. Police are investigating the cause.
