Firefighters have now left the scene of a major blaze at a business park after nearly two days.

Crews were sent to the Eurolink Industrial Estate in West Lane, Sittingbourne, on Saturday after a fire erupted at about 7pm.

At its height, 11 engines, a height vehicle and a bulk water carrier were at the scene battling the blaze, as well as a technical rescue unit and volunteer response team.

Firefighters surrounded the blaze as part of efforts to bring it under control, and after nearly 30 hours at the scene crews finally left at midnight yesterday.

Dramatic photos showed the scale of the huge fire at the West Lane site, which is believed to be a building used by the recycling company Suez - which handles tonnes of commercial waste.

People who live nearby in Kemsley and Iwade were warned to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution, due to levels of smoke in the area.

On Sunday only three fire engines remained at the scene as they continued to damp down hot spots while keeping an eye on the scene.

Luckily, nobody was hurt in the blaze and the cause has not yet been established.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Firefighting work is now complete at the scene of a fire at a commercial premises in West Lane, Sittingbourne.

"The earlier advice to close windows and doors is no longer in place.

"Thank you to local residents for your patience while crews continued to work at the site.

"Please share this update with neighbours, or people who live in the area, who might not have access to social media or the internet."
