Jukeboxes and jives could be on their way to Sittingbourne if three enthusiasts have their way.

Shane Bruce, Kim Stanton and Curt Hyland hope to open Freddie’s diner in memory of 39-year-old Curt’s parents Freddie and Kathy.

His dad was a teddy boy and his mum only died recently, so he decided to do something they would have liked using the inheritance left to him.

Curt, whose middle name is Elvis, said: “Shane and I have known each other since we were 12 and he was the only friend I had that my mum liked.”

Full-time carer Shane and partner Kim, 26, also love the 1950s and hope it will bring something different to the area.

Shane, 39, said: “We’ve had a lot of interest from hot rod clubs since setting up a Facebook page and we need a big car park.

"The response has been fantastic and we’ve had over 300 followers – everyone has been really supportive. A lot of people can’t wait and it’s great.”

The trio, all born and bred in Sittingbourne and living in Milton Regis, hope to open it up with a jukebox and waitresses in vintage dress serving diner-style food.

Although they do not have experience in the restaurant business, they hope to open within a year and are looking at sites slightly out of the town centre, in order to accommodate the large car park they hope will attract hot rod car clubs.

They also want the building to be fully accessible to disabled people and want to offer good gluten free and vegetarian food that’s not “just bean burgers”.

Curt said: “Dad left me three of his teddy boy suits which we were planning to put on the wall as decoration.”
