Sittingbourne Retail Association announces plans to celebrate St George's Day

17:30, 04 April 2015

St George’s Day will be marked by the town on Saturday, April 25.

For the second year running, Sittingbourne Retail Association has organised a host of activities to celebrate England’s patron saint.

The High Street will be filled with stalls, entertainment and a classic cars display from 11am until 5pm.

As well as a performance by the Whitstable’s Dead Horse Morris Side, there will be a real ale tent, market stalls, fairground rides, refreshments plus a tug-of-war competition. Teams of eight are being sought to take part in it, plus two reserves.

All shops will be open as usual, many of which will be taking part in a themed window display competition.

Co-ordinator Sara Seabridge said: “We’re really looking forward to the day. We’ve got more stalls than last year, the fairgrounds rides will be great fun, and I’m excited about judging the tug-of-war.”

The event was a major date in the town’s diary after it was launched in 2003 by Woolworths manager George Catlin.

Nigel Fosbraey, director of Autowash, Daren Blackbourn, who runs Blackbourn TV, and Vic Brobyn, co-owner of The Petshop, then organised the event on behalf of the Sittingbourne Retail Association from 2005.

But the plug was pulled on it in 2012 because of a lack of financial support and volunteers, as well as increasing costs of risk assessment and management.

A sub-committee of members of the association was formed the following year to revive the all-day celebration in 2014.

It proved to be a great success after thousands of people turned up to enjoy the attractions.
