The final results are in. The seats are divided as follows: Conservatives 16, Labour 11, Swale Independents 10, Liberal Democrats five, independents two, Green Party two and Ukip one.

4.40pm

The Minster Cliffs result is in and the ward remains split, with two Conservatives and one Swale Independent. Andy Booth, who was one of the sitting Tory councillors, misses out.

As it stands, Labour and the Conservatives are neck and neck on 11 seats each, six for the Swale Independents, five for the Lib Dems, two each for the independents and Green Party and one Ukip. There are just nine seats to go.

Massive result in Boughton and Courtenay as former council leader Andrew Bowles sensationally loses his seat to the Green Party. The other seat in the ward, formerly held by George Bobbing (Con) also turns Green!

Monique Bonney holds her West Downs seat in her head-to-head battle with Conservative Christine Coles. It can't be called a close one. Cllr Bonney received 899 votes to Christine's 135.

We're 15 results in and it's looking good for opposition groups (Labour seven seats, Lib Dems five, Conservatives three and Swale Independents one). Overall it represents five gains for the Lib Dems and Labour, and eight losses for the Tories.

It's as you were in Borden and Grove Park where Mike Baldock of Swale Independents polled 1,640. It was not so comfortable for Nicholas Hampshire (Con) but he held onto his seat, polling 712. The next best was Geoff Broughton (Lab), 581 votes.

Labour gain a seat from the Tories by winning Homewood Ward in Sittingbourne. Group leader Roger Truelove retains his seat and the other in the ward is taken by his colleague Simon Clark, marking a return to the borough council for him.

Another two massive losses for the Conservatives in Faversham as Mike Cosgrove and Nigel Kay lose out in St Ann's to Labour's Carole Jackson and Julian Saunders. What a shock!

In an otherwise dismal first few results for the Conservatives, James Hunt retains his Meads seat for the Tories.

More good news for the Lib Dems in Faversham as they take both the Watling seats from the Tories. Ben Martin and Eddie Thomas help turn the town orange.

There's a double blow for Conservative Sarah Aldridge. Having lost out in the KCC by-election she also loses her seat on the borough council in Roman ward. Both seats are taken by Labour, with Ken Rowles and Tim Gibson victorious.

It's so far so good for the Lib Dems in Faversham, as they earlier took Priory, which was previously occupied by independent Mike Henderson, who did not stand for re-election. So that's three seats gained by the Lib Dems.

Two big blows for the Conservatives as they lose two seats in Faversham. The Abbey ward is taken by the Lib Dems.

Swale Independents leader Mike Baldock is understandably delighted his group have won a seat on KCC from the Tories

The KCC by-election result is in and it's a win for the Swale Independents. The numbers are Sarah Aldridge (Con) 1,064, Jason Clinch (SI) 1,496, Alexander Stennings (LD) 284, Tony Winckless (Lab) 1,341. Turnout: 26.6%

Swale Conservative leader Andrew Bowles is not very optimistic. He says: "I think it's been depressing. I've done more canvassing than ever before and the main issue was Brexit and the Government's failure to deliver. The second main issue was the National Planning Policy Framework and the quantum of housing we are forced to allocate even if we don't want to.

"I blame the national party for those issues."

Labour leader on Swale Roger Truelove said: "There's a lot of support. Brexit has made people a bit anti-politics. But when we were talking about local issues there's a lot of support for us.

"A lot of Conservative voters are coming over to us but I haven't been to all the wards so we'll see what happens."

KCC Sittingbourne North division by-election result is now not expected until about noon. No reason has been given for why it is taking so long.

Leader of Swale Independents, Mike Baldock, says there has been a lot of anger at the main parties. He added: "I tried to talk about local issues on the doorstep and there are a lot in my ward people are angry about.

"Across the country where independents have put forward a platform of serious local focus they've done well."

Counting is underway in the by-election for the Sittingbourne North division on Kent County Council. It was previously occupied by Conservative Sue Gent who announced in March that she was stepping down. The result is expected shortly.

Turnout for these local elections is forecast to be low, with many voters disillusioned with the handling of Brexit. Here is a list of potential places where there may be an upset in Kent.
