A section of the M2 was blocked after a crash and a pensioner trapped in her car was rescued by fire crews.
The accident happened between junction 5 for Stockbury Roundabout and junction 6 for Faversham.
Traffic was stopped just before 2pm and there were queues about four miles long.
People avoiding the M20 by using Brenley Corner also added to the delays.
Two fire engines were sent to the scene and the crews found a lady in her early 70s trapped by her injuries in one of the vehicles.
She was released from the car and placed in the care of paramedics from SECAmb. Crews made the scene safe.
The vehicles were then moved to the hard shoulder and all lanes re-opened just before 4pm.
Elsewhere, there are reports of a crash on the A299 between Whitstable and Faversham.
Emergency services are on the scene.
