10:37, 15 February 2007
A YOUNG man is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash last night on the A249 at Hucking, near Sittingbourne.
Police say that two cars were in collision at about 8.40pm on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway near the Three Squirrels public house.
A police spokesman said: "Initial reports suggest that a blue Vauxhall Corsa collided with a black Ford Escort after the Vauxhall crossed into lane two, into the path of the Escort.
"The front seat passenger, a 21-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Medway Maritime Hospital before being taken to Darent Valley Hospital for further treatment.
"The female driver was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with chest injuries but these are not thought to be life-threatening. The male driver of the Escort was not injured."
The A249 was closed following the crash allowing recovery crews to attend the scene and remove the damaged vehicles.
The Maidstone bound carriageway was reopened at around 1.35am and the Sittingbourne bound carriageway was reopened at 2.40am.
Police officers are now appealing for witnesses to the collision, particularly the occupants of a vehicle which is thought to have overtaken the Vauxhall shortly beforehand.
Any witnesses are asked to call the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.
