It comes after a number of workers tested positive for Covid-19 at the site, with one person thought to be in intensive care.

There were reports of around 50 confirmed cases at the centre, but a Morrisons spokesman said only a "single digit" number of workers had tested positive.

The company could not give an exact number of employees who had received a positive test.

A spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with our colleague's family at this very difficult time.

"A single digit number of people at our Sittingbourne site have tested positive for coronavirus and we wish them a speedy recovery.

"We have robust measures in place to ensure it is as safe as possible for our colleagues."

An anonymous worker at the site said staff were working through "anxiety and fear" and claimed people were worried about their wellbeing and safety.

In September, workers at the distribution centre were told about a positive case at the site in a written letter.

The Sittingbourne warehouse covers 900,000 sq ft and has 200 lorry drivers delivering to 86 stores in the south east.

Earlier this month it was revealed a salad factory worker, which supplies Marks & Spencer, died after contracting the virus.
