A road was closed off after a man threatened to harm himself following a domestic incident.
Police were called just after 10.15am to a home in Archer Court on the Kemsley Fields estate in Kemsley.
A man was refusing to leave the property and said he intended to hurt himself.
Trained officers, supported by police dogs, started negotiations before they entered the house and detained a 26-year-old man.
While the discussions were going on the road was temporarily shut.
A police spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to thank residents and members of the public for their co-operation allowing officers to attend the incident.”
Rumours on social media suggested armed police were at the scene, however, the spokesman said no firearms officers were deployed.
