A £1million plan to convert the former town cinema into a top nightclub has been refused.

Members of Swale Council’s planning committee turned down the application last night (Thursday) due to fears of anti-social behaviour and noise levels for nearby residents.

Businessman Steve Cross was the man behind ambitious plans to transform the former Reeltime Cinema in Bell Road.

He wanted to create a night venue comprising of a reception area, first-floor bar area, second floor bar and dance area and a roof garden with self-contained bar, plants, patio heaters and seating.

The maximum capacity would have been 950 people and the opening hours 10am to 6am every day of the week.

Kent Police objected to the scheme because of concerns there would be a rise in anti-social behaviour when people left the nightclub.

More than 30 letters of objection from local residents were also received citing concerns including the creation of noise, litter, potential vandalism and a lack of parking.

A petition with 23 signatures against the proposal was also handed in from residents in Riverbourne Court because they were concerned the club would create additional noise.

There were also seven letters of support for the plan.

Despite all the objections council planning officers had recommended the application for approval saying it would benefit the night-time economy.
