An empty plot near Sittingbourne is set to be transformed into one of the most energy efficient housing schemes in Kent.
The six all-electric modular homes, which will be built in Oak Road, Murston, will be carbon neutral because they are air-tight, have well-insulated walls and feature solar panel roof tiles, which enable the properties to generate electricity.
The new development of three-bedroom family homes for rent, will be delivered by Public Sector Plc with NetZero Buildings, an award-winning builder responsible for the creation of Britain’s most energy efficient schools.
Instead of a traditional build, the homes will be built off-site in a factory using modern methods of construction with Homes England part funding the development.
From its factory in Cambridge, NetZero Buildings has been producing net zero carbon and energy positive buildings in Britain since 2014 and is due to complete its 100th A+ EPC building- the highest possible energy efficiency rating.
They are due to be completed in summer 2020 with the partnership progressing a further six carbon neutral housing developments across England.
The development is seen as a blueprint for the future and also forms the basis of a new model for housing for local authorities.
'Britain not only faces a crisis in the quantity of homes but also the quality' - Adam Cunnington
Public Sector Plc chief executive, Adam Cunnington said: "We are extremely excited to be working in Kent and playing a role in helping to supply new homes to meet the ongoing need for new quality family homes for the community.
"Britain not only faces a crisis in the quantity of homes but also the quality, as well as a global climate emergency.
"We’re proud to be working with our partner NetZero Buildings in leading the way with a new generation of housing which helps to tackle all of these problems and deliver new much-needed homes in Swale."
It is thought they will be able to be built quickly, as well as generating long-term income streams through renting the properties to reinvest in vital council services impacted by austerity.
NetZero Buildings chief executive, Steve Murphy said: "Having pioneered some of the most energy-efficient buildings in Britain we are proud to be delivering our first new homes, which are also among the most energy-efficient available anywhere in the country.
"Building precision offsite manufactured homes is rapidly becoming a key contributor in helping to solve the UK housing crisis and to deliver homes that are aligned with the Government agenda for the UK to become a NetZero carbon economy by 2050."
