Shetland pony rescued by RSPCA from field in Iwade with hooves so overgrown they looked like Arabian slippers
00:01, 30 April 2014
A Shetland pony with hooves described as looking like ‘Arabian slippers’ has been removed from a field in Iwade by the RSPCA.
The animal charity is now keen to trace the owner of the horse, which has since undergone veterinary treatment for its overgrown toes.
Inspectors were called to the site, which borders Raspberry Hill Lane and Ferry Road, following reports of concern for the animal’s welfare.
One witness, who doesn’t wish to be named, said: “It was in the field with other horses.
“What stood out was its hooves. They looked like slippers out of The Arabian Nights. It really got to me and made me bloody angry.
“Over the last 18 months there have been a few dead horses in the area so this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
An RSPCA spokesman said: “The pony’s hooves were in a very poor state and so severely overgrown they were beginning to curl up at the ends.
“Inspectors took the brown and white Shetland to be inspected and treated by a vet.
“It is believed the pony’s hooves had been left to grow for at least six months, if not longer.
“We are keen to speak to the owner of this pony and would urge anyone with more information to call 0300 123 4999.”
