September 11 attacks reflect on car hire firm
00:00, 04 April 2002
THE terrorist attacks in America on September 11 have been blamed for the financial problems facing the Kent firm S & B Car Hire, which has gone into administration.
Simon Paterson, a senior partner with Moore Stephens Corporate Recovery of Chatham which has been appointed as an administrator by Medway County Court, said the step was taken to protect the firm while its operations were restructured.
Mr Paterson, who shares the administration with David Elliott also from Moore Stephens, said: "Following the tragic events of September 11, S & B Car Hire has suffered from a slowdown in business. With fewer tourists visiting the area, there has been a decline in the demand for car hire.
"Despite this, the company is still considered to be a viable business. At this stage, there are no plans to close any of the company's sites and it is anticipated that the majority of the jobs will be retained by the on-going business."
The company, which has premises at Pembury Street, Sittingbourne, and at Maidstone and Chatham, will continue to operate as normal during restructuring which should be completed within three months.
Mr Paterson added: "Fortunately, the directors have acted responsibly in seeking early professional advice and we are hopeful and that S & B Car Hire will retain its position as one of the premier independent care hire companies in Kent."
