A new drinking place could soon be provided for residents living in the Kemsley area.

Trustees of the community centre, in Ridham Avenue, are inviting people to attend a meeting to discuss the formation of a social club at the venue which is already a licensed premises.

It takes place at the hall at 2pm on Sunday and will be followed by live entertainment at 3pm, a barbecue (weather permitting) at 4pm and a disco from 5pm onwards.

The idea came about following the closure of the Kemsley Arms pub, which is next door to the centre.

It shut its doors in May 2013 and plans have since been passed for the owner to turn the building into flats and shops.

If supported, it’s hoped the social club will run every Friday and Saturday between 7pm and 11pm.

People would be asked to pay a £5 membership fee and it would hope to attract families.

It would not affect the groups and organisations which currently use the hall such as Swale Gloves Boxing Club and Little Stars Pre-School.

Trustee David Glover said: “It is in the very early stages but I do feel confident this will happen and will succeed.”

More than 2,000 pamphlets advertising the meeting are being hand-delivered over the last few days.
