A teenager used a machete to stab his mother’s 40-year-old boyfriend to death, it has been alleged.

Rohan Daniels, 19, was arrested and charged with murder after a deadly attack was carried out on David Perry at his home in December 2022.

Prosecutor Danny Moore told Maidstone Crown Court how that night the victim was in Sittingbourne playing cards.

Later, it was alleged, the two men argued over missing tobacco and a member of the family heard some “rustling” noises at the top of the stairs.

He added: “She got to the top of the stairs and saw Mr Perry looking shocked facing her in the doorway to Daniels’ bedroom.

“She saw that he was seriously injured, stab wounds to his chest that were bleeding and a wound to his left side that was spurting blood. He then collapsed to the floor.”

The prosecution has claimed Mr Perry was repeatedly stabbed with a machete at the property in Medway Close, off College Road.

Mr Moore continued: “The blade length measured approximately 25cm and the widest point is approximately 5.5cm. The width at the hilt of the handle was around 4.7cm. It was a huge weapon. Daniels then fled, still holding the knife, it was alleged.”

Mr Moore said paramedics and police arrived after reports a man had been attacked and tried to help but Mr Perry had already died.

Pathologist Dr Virginia Fitzpatrick-Swallow told the jury how Mr Perry received eight stab wounds.

The post-mortem examination revealed a total of eight stab wounds and 10 incised wounds.

The fatal stab wound was to the left side of the abdomen.

He said the wound would have resulted in “profuse uncontrollable haemorrhage” and collapse would be expected to occur within a small number of seconds with cardiac arrest developing within a small number of minutes.

Daniels, of College Road, Sittingbourne, has denied murder.

After handing himself to police he provided a prepared statement in which he accepted he had caused the injuries but asserted he acted in self-defence.

Mr Moore told the jury: “There is no dispute that Daniels killed Mr Perry with that huge knife. He repeatedly stabbed the unarmed Mr Perry.

“If there was an assault, his response did not justify taking up this weapon let alone using it in the manner revealed by the injuries.

“It was not reasonable or proportionate to respond to any assault to repeatedly stab Mr Perry including in the back.”

The trial continues.
