An inspirational Sittingbourne girl is being recognised for her charity work by supermarket giants Morrisons.

Iwade youngster Angel Farley will be the Sittingbourne store’s first winner of the Little Sunshine award thanks to her continuous efforts to raise money for the NHS and Great Ormond Street.

The young amputee is well known in the town for her charitable causes, which have included hand delivering Christmas cards to every house in her village, doing a sponsored walk from Iwade to Medway Hospital and walking 100 laps around her courtyard in 19 days.

Morrison’s champion Sal Candy praised Angel, 13, for her continued work.

She said: “Angel is always looking for a way to raise money and is loved by everyone in the town. It’s been a really tough time for a lot of people and her positivity and kindness has really made a difference.”

The Iwade teen was born with two rare conditions Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency and Sacral Agenesis, which meant she was born without a right femur bone, right hip socket and part of her lower spine.

In 2018, days after her 10th birthday, she had her right leg amputated, but she was left with a severe infection and sepsis. Her life was saved by medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Mum Holly said: “It was a lovely surprise to hear from Sal and the team.

“We’re super proud of Angel and everything she’s done. Our first charity walk was the KM Charity 10km one in Maidstone.

“The second was from our home in Iwade to Medway Hospital and we decided to split the money between Great Ormond Street Hospital and the disablement centre in Medway where Angel had her prosthetic leg made.

“During the third walk we had to remain home due to lockdown, so for nearly three weeks we walked 100 laps a day in our car park - 1,900 in total - and donated the funds to the NHS charity.”

Angel will be doing another sponsored walk from Iwade to Chatham Dockyard on Saturday, August 14, to raise funds for the Spread a Smile charity, which helps care for terminally ill children and their families during hospital stays.
