Two trainspotters got more than they bargained for when a fire crew had to be called to rescue them from a lift.

One fire engine was sent to Sittingbourne Railway Station in St Michael's Road, Sittingbourne, yesterday, at about 11.40am.

The man and woman, who were well known to station staff, were trapped for about 40 minutes after the machinery broke down.

They were in the lift on the coast-bound side of the platform.

Sittingbourne Fire Station crew manager, Mat Barney, said the lift had to be manually winched down.

He added: "We used a lift key to open the door once it was on the ground.

"The train station personnel did a cracking job at keeping them calm by shouting up to them through the lift shaft."

The crew left at about 12.20pm.
