Ocakbasi of Kent closes its Station Street, Sittingbourne, restaurant
15:38, 01 August 2024
A Turkish restaurant has closed just months after opening in a town centre.
Signage has been taken down and letters are piling up at Ocakbasi of Kent, in Station Street, Sittingbourne, after it closed last month.
It opened in January but after its six-month lease period ran out bosses decided to leave the town.
Ali Türer, who also owns a restaurant in Canterbury said it was not financially viable for them to continue in Sittingbourne.
He added: “We were not getting enough customers and while we loved the Sittingbourne people, we couldn’t carry on.”
The restaurant closed on Sunday, July 7.
Before Ocakbsi moved in Galata Mezze occupied the building.
The award-winning restaurant announced it was closing for renovations in July last year after revealing an ambitious plan to renovate. But it never reopened.
One of the restaurant's chefs, Tacim Yetis, won the Chef of the Year prize in the 10th annual British Kebab Awards in March last year.
Galate Mezze, which opened in October 2019, did not provide a statement informing customers of the closure.
