They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and that was certainly the case when a village household sale was held in Kemsley.

Some 35 residents loaded up their front gardens and driveways with their unwanted items and for sale signs on Sunday.

A list detailing the houses taking part was available for people to pick up from the village hall so they could then navigate their way around the estate in their hunt for bargains.

The event was organised by Samantha Bryant, 39, in a bid to prove the area has community spirit.

It followed negative comments about the estate on the social networking site Facebook.

The married mum-of-three, who lives in Reams Way, Kemsley, said: “It went well. There were around 50 people who signed up for it to start with but some dropped out.

“I heard from someone that one household made £200 on the day, but most made about £30 or £40.

“I wasn’t going to hold a sale, but in the end my husband de-cluttered our youngest’s bedroom and we made £24.

It also made him more social with the neighbours. I’m a stay-at-home mum so I see a lot of people, but he works so he’s always coming and going.

“Everyone seemed to have fun, but I’ve learned some lessons like I couldn’t produce a map showing all the houses taking part like and that I’ll need more help next time.

“I would like to do it again next year, but it depends on the feedback I get from people.”
