Pupils at a secondary school have been warned to be on their guard after a man tried to grab a 14-year-old girl.

A letter was sent to parents of youngsters at Fulston Manor suggesting they do not walk to the site, on Brenchley Road, Sittingbourne, alone.

Deputy head Nigel Tiller told parents: "The police were involved this morning when one of our students was approached by a male on her way to school.

"He has followed a female student for the last three days. This has taken place around the Blenheim Road area, near Fallowfield and Wadham Place/Swanstree Avenue.

"He mumbles to himself and has followed her without saying anything until today when he reached our to grab her and she shouted out, so he turned and walked away.

The man is described as 6ft to 6ft 1in, stocky, in his mid-20s, unshaven and wore a dark blue hoody with the hood up, baggy light grey tracksuit bottoms with dirty knees and teal blue, old, scruffy trainers.

The warning has also been sent to other schools in the area, including primary schools.

Speaking to KentOnline's sister paper, the Sittingbourne Messenger, Mr Tiller added: “She had been aware of this gentleman on Monday and Tuesday and then on Wednesday (yesterday) he approached her.

“It would have been between 8am and 8.30am. The pastoral staff spoke to her. She was very concerned.

“It’s an unusual event - 99 days out of 100 there’s never a problem. This heightens awareness that these things happen.”

Police confirmed they were investigating.

A spokesman said: “Officers are carrying out inquiries after a teenage girl felt concerned that a man may have been following her as she walked in the Swanstree Avenue area of Sittingbourne, just before 8am on Wednesday 30 September.”

It comes as another school in the county issues a similar warning after a suspicious man tried to lure a young girl into his car.
