Sittingbourne stink returns as Stockbury villager says more must be done
19:25, 29 August 2017
Bad smells have been detected in the air around a Kent town again.
The frequent pong is noticed around Sittingbourne and one nearby villager is calling on more to be done to restrict what farmers spread on their fields.
It comes just days after another mystery stink plagued the town and the surrounding area.
Resident Barry Pladdys, who lives in Stockbury, feels more should be done so residents don't have to put up with it.
He said: "It's an obnoxious stench. This afternoon it was unbearable. We couldn't have our windows open.
"It seems to happen every year and we're suffering and have to put up with it.
"It does seem it's this paper waste but why do they choose on the couple of hottest days of the year?
"It reoccurs every year. It really shouldn't but you just have to live with it.

"Any breeze has gone and that doesn't help it because it doesn't disperse it.
"I can't go out. I suffer breathing difficulties and I've not been able to go out.
"The farmers have got to make a living but this impacts on everybody and it shouldn't be allowed to.
"There's 2,000 odd people in the village and I expect we're all affected by it.
He said he couldn't be sure what the cause was or where it was coming from but that it could be from paper waste being spread on the fields.
The villager added it could not be a gas leak as the village is not connected, he said, and they were not on the mains drainage.
Mr Pladdys said it was concerning "nothing is being done" especially after calls for a national inquiry was requested following the chemical cloud which spread across the south coast at the weekend.
