Aslan Odev has been backed to continue as Sittingbourne manager by one of the club's key decision-makers.

Secretary John Pitts says he will vote for Odev when the Brickies committee consider Odev's future at the end of the season.

Odev had a difficult start as caretaker boss following Nick Davis' resignation, losing his first five games.

But he's grown into the role by winning four of the next eight games, with only two defeats.

That's been achieved against a backdrop of injuries and player departures and now Odev has put himself in a strong position to stay in charge.

Pitts said: "He's certainly done his chances no harm at all with the way Sittingbourne have been playing.

"I'm only one member of the committee but I'd vote for Aslan to have the job next season.

"We're very pleased with what he's done.

"The team are playing well and defensively they've been very good even though we've been very unlucky with injuries.

"What they do under Aslan, I must say, is they never give up.

"He's very calm and very matter of fact. He's stuck in there and he's got results.

"To be honest, I don't think he could have done any better, especially after losing the players he did as well and having to bring in replacements.

"What we're gradually getting is a good balance of youth and experience and that's what we need.”

Odev was first-team coach under Davis, becoming the youngest manager in Bostik South at just 26 after taking the reins.

He lost the likes of Miles Cornwell, Sal Kisitu and Bola Dawodu while the club's three contracted players, John Coker, Lex Allan and Kane Rowland, are all injured.

But he's built up contacts quickly, making impressive signings such as left-back Fabrice Blewordah and Swiss winger Sefyettin Akdeniz, as well as embracing the club's youth structure.

He's given himself every chance of staying on but there's competition in the wings.

Pitts said: "We've got a lot of people who are interested in the job.

"I had 29 emails with CVs the day after Nick decided he wanted to leave and I'm sure if we did say the job's up for grabs we'd get a host more."

Sittingbourne entertain title-chasing Carshalton at Woodstock this Saturday.
