Under-strength Kent Kings had a meeting to forget against Mildenhall Fen Tigers on Monday night.
They were 13 points down after only three heats and went on to suffer a 56-38 National Trophy defeat.
Kings were missing vice-captain David Mason through illness, while Danny Ayres was caught up in Tour de France traffic and didn't race.
Kent were quickly out of contention, although Central Park fans were lifted by the performance of captain Simon Lambert who returned 15 points and regained the Bronze Helmet.
Kings manager John Sampford said: "In all my years in speedway, being 13 points down after only three heats is something I have never experienced.
"To say everything that could go wrong did go wrong is an understatement."
Next up at Central Park is the visit of National League leaders Cradley Heathens on Monday (6.30pm).
