Sittingbourne captain Ben Davisson joins Chatham Town
11:00, 14 March 2018
Captain Ben Davisson has left Sittingbourne for Chatham Town.
Midfielder Davisson was made skipper by caretaker boss Aslan Odev but has dropped a level to join Chats in the Southern Counties East League.
Odev said: “He was my captain, so that’s a little bit unfortunate for us but that was his decision.
"It was one of those things where he came to me and was honest about his reasons.
“In the game of football no one’s bigger than the team and the team always has to evolve.
“He was a good player for us and I liked him but we have to move on quickly because the games come thick and fast.
“We’ll be fine, we’ll always evolve and just try and bring players in who can do a job.”
Defender Chris Webber Sittingbourne’s new skipper.
Odev said: “Chris has been a fantastic servant, the fans love him, the boys in the changing room love him and I get on well with him.
“He’s the perfect replacement. He’s always taken it upon himself to be a leader so it’s the natural step.”
Centre-half John Coker could miss the rest of the season after having a knee operation.
Odev says the player is mentally ready to return but the injury has proved more serious than first thought.
It means teenagers Lex Allan and Josh Dorling will continue in defence after a ringing endorsement from their manager.
Odev said: “I have faith in them, completely and utterly.
“They’re two young players who have tons of potential and they have the right attitude and mentality to go on and improve.
“At the moment they’re good, they’re fine, they’re learning and I’m a coach that’s come from a youth background, so I like to see players improve.”
Sittingbourne face a tricky trip to Bostik South play-off contenders Hythe on Saturday.
Odev said: "It’ll be a tough game but what an opportunity to make a statement at Sittingbourne and go on a little run or nick a result.”
