Shane Byrne dedicated part one of his latest double to two riders killed in road racing.

Sittingbourne man Byrne wore stickers in memory of former British Superbike riders Simon Andrews and Karl Harris during round three of the championship at Snetterton on Sunday.

Andrews died in the North West 200 in Northern Ireland in May, while Harris suffered a fatal crash at the Isle of Man TT this month.

Byrne said: “Simon and Karl are a big loss to the racing community. Simon was a good lad but Karl and I started around the same time and I got on well with him.

“Karl, especially, was one of those people I always thought was indestructible when you see some of the crashes he walked away from.

“You can’t think about death when you’re racing. It makes it slightly easier the fact it happened on roads and not short circuits.

“Losing someone on the roads isn’t inevitable but the reality is, if you have an accident, you’re fighting trees and lampposts rather than gravel traps. I’ve nothing but admiration for the guys and they died doing something they loved.

“It was sad for British Superbikes and I’d like to dedicate my first win to those guys.”
