Upchurch Cricket Club has been bowled over by the response to its appeal to keep it afloat during the coronavirus lockdown.

Within a day of its launch the Go Fund Me page received £1,445 of its £2,000 target - with some supporters digging deep and coughing up £100 a time - and now it has topped £2,300.

Club chairman Dave Tyler said: "We are more than just a cricket club, we are a community hub for the rural areas of Swale and Medway.

"But like everyone else, we are suffering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Because of the lockdown we have not had our usual boost of income from memberships, ground hire or cash over the bar at the clubhouse during social get-togethers.

"We appeal to those who have fond memories of the club or who are still actively involved to please help us out, be it with £1, £10 or whatever you can.

"We need their help if we are to survive this difficult period. Please dig deep so we can continue to develop and thrive."

The club has more than 400 cricket members. The site is home to 200 footballers and normally hosts more than 10 cricket matches a week and at least one booking for its clubhouse. It also hosts sporting events for schools across Kent.

More than 1,000 people are believed to use its facilities over the course of a year.

It was set up to support family-centred fun, fitness, equality and to reward ability with the aim of improving the mental and physical wellbeing.

Fundraising organiser Laura Pike added: "We strive to provide positive role models for our huge Colts squad and we encourage cross-generational participation. We bring the community together for fireworks, camping and parties. This holistic approach brings out the best in everyone."
