Sittingbourne regained the Bob Amor Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory at Swale rivals Faversham on Saturday.
It may have been a pre-season game but there was silverware on the line and the Brickies wanted to take it home after last year’s defeat.
Boss Ryan Maxwell made wholesale changes at half-time but the Brickies were comfortable winners at Salters Lane.
Ayman El Morgharbel opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark and new signing Codey Cosgrave made it two with a classy free-kick.
Henry Sinai stretched the lead with a lovely run and finish in the second half and Mitchell May added number four before Frannie Collin’s late reply.
“It was a good day for us on Saturday,” said Maxwell.
“We were focused in the main on giving players 45 minutes.
“I wanted to have a look at some things and change the shape, so I wasn’t too sure what it would look like, but it went well.
“We were very good in possession.
“The 3G surface was there to be enjoyed and I made sure the players did that but I also said it would be nice to take the cup back to Sittingbourne as well, so please bear that in mind.
“There were some really good individual performances and I was pleased the dynamic of the team and those relationships have built up pretty quickly it seems.
“We’re in a good place at the moment as far as pre-season preparations goes.”
A number of new signings caught the eye, not least Cosgrave with the quality of his free-kick.
Maxwell said: “As with all young players, there will be little dips but that’s fine.
“He certainly has ability - that’s why I brought him here - and I wasn’t overly surprised he wanted to take the free-kick.
“He did so with aplomb and hopefully there’s more of those to come.
“We had some good performances from Troy Howard, Gil Carvalho, Joe Boachie and Henry, who tucked his goal away extremely well after cutting inside.
“There were a lot of new boys out there but we’ve been training well and I think the outcome on Saturday was due to the decision we made to have the balls out quite a bit in training.
“That’s helped us get an understanding of who can do what.
“We had control of the game but, ultimately at this stage, it’s about minutes in the tank and coming through with no injuries.”
Sittingbourne host National League South Maidstone at Woodstock tonight (7.45pm).
