It all came down the final race of the afternoon, with Ben Morley’s fifth heat win proving decisive in a 45-43 victory.

Morley finished with 17 points - some effort given he only landed from holiday at 3.40am that morning.

He enjoyed a tapes-to-flag in the opening heat but the Rockets responded with a maximum for Dayle Wood and Rob Hollingworth in heat two.

The Kings made their mark with back-to-back advantages in heats four and five, courtesy of wins for Morley and captain Rhys Naylor (12+2).

Ex-Kent rider Nathan Ablitt was in sublime form against his old club, dominating the middle part of the meeting with three wins in four races en route to a 17-point haul.

The fastest of those came in heat six in edging Morley.

Rye House held a five-point lead with six races remaining but Kent hit back hard with successive maximums to go three clear.

Morley and Naylor took the first, and Morley was at it again in partnership with Sam Woods (7+3).

If the first 14 races had been dramatic, things reached fever pitch in the final race with the scores level at 41-41.

Ablitt led the Kings duo of Morley and Woods, with the Rockets’ Henning Loof limping around at the back on a sick bike.

Morley made his move at the start of the third lap, getting on the inside of Ablitt down the home straight and taking the win.
