Sittingbourne manager Aslan Odev out to banish unhappy memories of Guernsey
00:00, 21 September 2018
Aslan Odev flies to the Channel Islands with added motivation to lead Sittingbourne to victory.
The Brickies lost 3-0 to Guernsey last season in one of his first games as caretaker manager.
It was an unhappy trip for Odev, who is desperate to avoid a repeat when the sides meet in Bostik South East on Sunday (2pm).
He said: "It's a game I really want to win, especially after my experience there last season.
"It was one of the big lows when I took over as manager.
"I was eager to make an impression but we went there and lost 3-0 and I wasn't happy with how anyone was playing.
"Fortunately we managed to turn things around."
Guernsey, who sit 14th, are usually strong at home but Odev doesn't want the journey to be an excuse for his players.
He said: "The journey is always the question mark when teams go there.
"As soon as the whistle goes we've got to be fully focused and the players have got to manage themselves.
"Going there on the Sunday we'll have had an extra day's rest, so we'll see how we go."
Sittingbourne are back in action on Tuesday night at Kent rivals Ashford (7.45pm).
That'll be a test, two days on from Guernsey, but Odev feels they have the players to cope.
He said: "We've only got Monday in between so we've got to try to manage the squad.
"We have a fantastic group of lads here and I can rotate if I need to.
"It's only down the road and derbies always have a little bit more spice.
"If we play how we should and everyone knows their roles, we can beat anyone in this league."
