Sittingbourne race walker Cameron Corbishley produced a personal best 20km time at the European Championships on Sunday.

Corbishley completed the distance in Podebrady, Czech Republic with a time of 1:22:50 to finish just behind Kent Olympian Tom Bosworth (1:22:27).

Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom won the race in 1:18:54 ahead of Spanish pair Alvaro Martin and Diego Garcia. Miguel Angel Lopez finished fourth to ensure team gold for Spain.

Bosworth, who has already booked his GB Olympic spot for Tokyo this summer, was in the chasing group behind Salih Korkmaz, who had sprinted away from the start, but dropped off just before the 11km mark.

Tonbridge race walker Bosworth, who has previously finished fourth at the event and helped Britain to team silver in 2019, finished in 15th place while Medway & Maidstone AC’s Corbishley’s PB saw him finish three places further back.

Corbishley, who described himself as “over the moon” with his weekend race also competes at 50km and earlier this season posted a time of 3:54:15 at the longer distance.

The Kent pair were the only men’s race walkers representing Great Britain at the championships.

Reacting to the weekend race, Bosworth admitted he was frustrated and said: “I’d have liked to have got through that race with no problems so I know my performance reflects truly where I’m at. Hopefully that’ll come next time out.”

Commenting on his fellow GB team-mate, he said: “Big respect and congratulations to Cam Corbishley. Paced his race brilliantly to continue his big progression over 20km and of course 50km.

“Think BA (British Athletics) missed a trick overlooking him for the 50k in Tokyo. On his way up with a bright future over all distances.”

Prior to the race Bosworth tweeted: “Almost feeling pain free but really excited and honoured to be back racing for my country again.”
