Former Gillingham youngster Roman Campbell is on the move again after leaving Sittingbourne for Folkestone.

Campbell, having enjoyed two successful loan spells with Bourne, joined the Isthmian South East club at the end of January after Gills cancelled his contract by mutual consent.

But he’s now swapped the Brickies for Folkestone’s Isthmian Premier promotion challenge after a week of deliberation.

Sittingbourne boss Chris Lynch, writing on Facebook, revealed details of the deal.

He said: “This is another tough one, as Folkestone are a league above, they are in the play-offs currently, they have offered him a one-and-a-half-year contract which, should they get promoted, will increase his wage further.

“We simply cannot compete with that, Mo (Maurice Dunk, chairman) was personally covering Roman’s wage.

“It has been a very difficult decision for Roman personally, which has taken him all week to consider.”

Campbell made a farewell appearance in Sittingbourne’s 2-1 defeat against Haywards Heath on Tuesday night.

Lynch added: “The one thing it shows is that we have recruited extremely well this season.

“Never before have I, or anyone at the club, ever had to deal with as many seven-day requests in a single season.

“Just about every one of our players, since September, teams from above have been after.

“I would like to thank Roman for his spells here, his goal contributions both this and last season, we wish him all the very best in his quest to achieve league football.”

Campbell, who helped Gillingham reach the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup last season, has also had loan spells with Enfield, Ramsgate and Margate this term.
