THE parents of schoolboy who died following a stroke said he could “light up a room with his smile”.

Nine-year-old Matthew Giles was taken ill while riding his beloved pony at his home in Lower Road, Stone, near Tenterden

He was taken to Ashford's William Harvey Hospital and later transferred to London’s Evelina Children’s Hospital where he died a week later.

The sporty youngster, a pupil at Wittersham primary school, made a big impression on those who knew him. His school has postponed its spring fair in his memory.

His mother, Nikki, said: “He was very cheeky, lovable and cared deeply about his sisters, Lucinda and Charlotte. No words can say how much we miss him and love him.

“He would light up a room with his smile and sense of humour.”

Matthew was a goalkeeper for Wittersham under 10s and a member of The Ashford Valley Pony Club. He trained regularly for the tetrathlon, which involves riding, shooting, swimming and running – and enjoyed riding his quad bike.

Mrs Giles said: “He had a new pony for Christmas and he was very dedicated to Maisie. He won his first affiliated jumping class on her.”

Matthew’s father, Paul, said: “In nine years he managed to pack so much in. He was into everything. He was just so full of life.”

A service of celebration is being held at Wittersham church on Thursday, April 13. Any donations will go towards a charity or a sports group.
