It has been confirmed that the case was a member of staff, but none of their colleagues have been contacted by test and trace yet so the cause is believed to be external.

A post on its Facebook page said: "Customer update: There has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 on site, therefore we are closing the centre today at 3pm for a deep clean.

"Further updates will follow shortly. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Comments below the post showed concern among recent visitors at the possibility of having been infected.

The leisure centre is advising that any recent visitors who start showing symptoms should self-isolate.

"Our centre is a really safe place to be..."

Tenterden Leisure Centre only reopened on December 2, at the end of the national lockdown.

On December 4, a Facebook post from the trust said: "We want to reassure you, that our centre is a really safe place to be. Fitness facilities have an outstanding safety record.

"Thanks to the attention to cleaning and social distancing plus a robust and effective test and trace system, the overall infection rate for UK gyms and leisure centres is less than 1% per 100,000 visits."
