A swimming pool is set to stay shut for at least the rest of the week after a storm ripped off its roof.

Work is under way to repair Tenterden Leisure Centre after a large section of the roof – which is currently undergoing replacement works – was torn off during bad weather on Saturday night.

The centre and its two car parks were immediately shut, with swimming lessons cancelled until further notice.

The car park to the front of the centre was reopened on Monday, and a spokesman confirmed today that the gym and aerobics Studio have been reopened for group exercise classes.

He also said that the sports hall would be reopened tomorrow "subject to further satisfactory assessments".

"The swimming pool reopening is being reviewed, and we are currently hopeful for a Monday afternoon reopening in time for late afternoon swimming lessons," he added.

"This is subject to the required works progressing well. For those of you with children on swimming lessons we kindly request you do not phone, or visit the centre in the meantime, we will be in touch.

"Please be aware - there is likely to be some noise from building contractors on site whilst daytime works are carried out".

Work began in September to remove the centre's roof covering completely and replace it with a more thermally efficient roof, which will also require less maintenance.

The project was scheduled to last 20 weeks, which would have meant completion will be mid-January 2022. It is not known if the recent damage will postpone that deadline.
