David Cameron and one of his former ministers are red-faced today - after a brace of embarrassing gaffes.

Firstly, a young dyslexic woman spotted an embarrassing spelling error on a flyer produced by Conservative Damian Green.

The politician, who has represented more than 80,000 Ashford district residents since he was first elected in 1997, leafleted thousands of homes with the document setting out his priorities for the forthcoming election.

However he spelt Tenterden incorrectly, instead writing Tenderden in a prominent heading.

And in a separate gaffe even prime minister David Cameron doesn't seem to know his party lost the Rochester and Strood by-election - even though he visited five times during the campaign.

In an official letter he refers to the hope the party can 'hold' the seat - which it actually lost to Ukip in November.

The Damian Green mistake was spotted by a 26-year-old dyslexic woman, who wished to remain anonymous, but who emailed it to our sister paper, the Kentish Express.

Businesswoman Anne Nelson, of Rogersmead, Tenterden, also spotted the error and blasted the politician for the inaccuracy.

She said: “The spelling error is so basic. I know it’s probably only a typo, but he is standing in the Ashford and Tenterden constituency.

“It’s not like he did it in a rush; he’s had five years to plan this and he knew when the election was going to be.”

Mrs Nelson added: “He needs to employ a proofreader, locally, which would help with unemployment.”

Defending the spelling blunder, Mr Green said: “It was a straightforward printing error on one side of the leaflet, which was spotted before distribution.

“We could have chosen to scrap it at vast expense but we decided to go ahead with it. These things happen at printers.”

In the Prime Minister's blunder he refers to Rochester and Strood in an official headed document sent out earlier this month.

He said: "If the Conservatives are able to hold seats like Rochester and Strood we only need to win 23 more to form a majority and guarantee Ed Miliband doesn't become Prime Minister."

The letter follows a huge campaign by the Conservatives last November, culminating in defector Mark Reckless taking the seat for Ukip.
