A veteran campaigner whose dying wish was to see Manston Airport reopen has been laid to rest a short distance from the runway.

Doris Lamport, 91, passed the airport for a final time this week as her funeral procession made its way to Thanet Crematorium.

Plucky Doris had been a passionate supporter of the airport and loved to watch the planes fly overhead from her home in Pegwell Road, Ramsgate, as they took off and landed nearby.

Crowds of campaigners cheered and passing drivers sounded their horns as Doris’s coffin was driven past Manston Airport.

Daughter Janice Beukes, 61, said: “During the war mum worked on gun parts for Hawker Hurricane aircraft. I think that ignited a lifelong passion for planes."

Doris’s passion for the airport was recognised by the many campaigners who witnessed the funeral procession drive past on Tuesday [June 17].

Doris’s family later scattered her ashes at the crematorium, which is just 1.6 miles from the airport.
