An Aldi store is set to be demolished to make way for a larger shop in a multi-million-pound investment.

It will also see more parking spaces added to the Zion Place discount retail site in Cliftonville after an application was given the green light by Thanet council on Thursday.

The redevelopment of the "dated" store will safeguard up to 50 jobs and will include 97 parking spaces.

The supermarket opened in 1998 and, according to bosses, is no longer fit for purpose.

The application on behalf of the superstore chain stated: "The existing store in Margate is dated, having first opened in 1998 and is 24% smaller than Aldi's latest format store size, at only 951sqm.

"As a result, the store does not reflect the company's latest and most up to date operational requirements and principles.

"The proposals will allow Aldi to retain their popular presence at the existing site in Margate, where the principle of retail is established and acceptable and where demand for a discount retailer remains high.

"This represents a significant investment, maintaining the economic contribution of the site and retaining local jobs, while improving retail choice and competition locally.

"The application proposes the demolition of the existing Aldi store at Zion Place and replacement with a new and contemporary foodstore to deliver and larger and enhanced store and car park."

A date has not yet been revealed for when the store is to be demolished and work to begin on the redevelopment.
