An Aldi branch is set to close for nearly six weeks while refurbishment work is carried out.

The store in Northdown Road and Zion Place, Cliftonville, will close at 10pm on Saturday, February 18, to begin the extensive works.

It will be shut for more than a month before reopening on Thursday, March 30, with a brand new layout.

An Aldi spokesman said the new layout will be "simpler and much brighter", with more space for its fresh, chilled, and food-to-go ranges.

They added: "We will keep the community updated on developments."

Earlier this month, the discount supermarket apologised for "incorrectly carrying out bag searches" following a rise in shoplifting.

Shoppers at the Sheerness branch said staff at the shop had accused them of stealing products without any evidence to back up their claims, leading some customers in tears and others having their bags emptied in front of fellow customers.

The chain's new flagship store at Neats Court, Sheppey, was also approved by councillors last month after an email campaign.

Aldi had warned it would pull out of Sheppey altogether if councillors had turned down the application.

In November, Ashford's second branch of the discount supermarket was approved for Waterbrook Park next to the new KFC drive-thru.

The plans had faced objections from an equestrian charity over fears horses on the nearby bridleway may be spooked.
