Barclays bank set to close in Ramsgate this year

19:25, 16 January 2024

A town centre is set to lose a bank after it was revealed less than 10 per cent of customers use the branch as the sole method to manage their funds.

Barclays has announced it will close its site in Queen Street, Ramsgate within months – meaning people have to trek to Canterbury or Ashford for face-to-face banking.

Explaining the reason for the closure in an information leaflet, Barclays says: “Back when we opened this branch, visiting us in person was one of the only ways to do your banking.

“Now, as there are lots of ways to manage your money without even leaving your home, we’re seeing many customers choosing to bank using our app, and online or telephone banking.

“This has had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us.

“When deciding whether to close this branch, we looked carefully at how it’s been used and how customers are banking in other ways.”

The leaflet says 93 per cent of people who use the branch have also banked using its app, online or via phone in 2022.

It also claims 14% of its Ramsgate customers used another nearby Barclays in the past year.

The bank says the branch will close on April 19.

Elsewhere in the county, small businesses in Strood slammed the “terrible” decision by Natwest and Lloyds Banks to shut their town centre branches next year.

NatWest will shut on March 6 while Lloyds will close on April 4.
