Five beach huts have been destroyed after a blaze ripped through them in the early hours of the morning.

Fire crews were called to Minnis Bay, at The Parade in Birchington, at about 00.40am to a report of six huts alight.

It is believed to have started accidentally as a result of a cooker being left on inside one of them.

Two fire engines attended and a main jet was used to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters are urging people to double check hobs/ovens are turned off after cooking to avoid incidents like this.

In July, three beach huts were destroyed after huts caught alight on Westcliff Road, Margate.

Leanne McMahon, group manager for community safety said: "Whether cooking at home in the kitchen, having a barbecue in the garden, using a portable stove while camping or cooking in a beach hut - it's so important to check, and check again, that you've turned cooking appliances off once you're finished.

"By doing these quick checks, you can make sure you have an enjoyable and fire safe mealtime."

Five huts were destroyed and the sixth had smoke and heat damage.

Crews left had left the scene by 2am.
